Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Rama Rau will lead the inaugural edition of the DOC Executive Accelerator (DEA) Lab. Announced today by the DOC Institute, Rau will facilitate this new professional development program that aims to “strengthen the next generation of documentary executives and support the long-term sustainability and growth of Canada’s independent documentary sector.” The program connects participants with key industry players during TIFF: The Market in September. (The festival recently announced a slate of documentary-focused talks and panels among its industry programming.)
The DOC Institute’s DEA Lab fosters mid-career documentary producers and executives by engaging them in professional development opportunities and forging international connections in the marketplace. The program also works to boost management skills and better prepare participants for the realities of financing and marketing in a shifting documentary ecosystem.
Rau is an acclaimed director and producer whose films have screened across major festivals. Her 2016 documentary The League of Exotique Dancers, about veteran burlesque performers, opened Hot Docs. Her other projects include the feature documentaries Coven (2023), Daughter Tree (2019), No Place to Hide: The Rehtaeh Parsons Story (2014), and The Market (2011). She won the 2011 Don Haig Award at Hot Docs in recognition of her body of work as a producer with a history of mentoring new voices.
“As an independent creator who has navigated this evolving landscape for decades, I know firsthand the sheer grit it takes to build a sustainable media company today. This Lab is an opportunity to equip mid-career producers with practical tools to strengthen their businesses, retain and grow their IP, and explore new avenues for financing and international collaboration,” said Rau in a statement from the DOC Institute.
“I look forward to mentoring this extraordinary cohort, both virtually and in person during TIFF and the Access Canada Summit, as we elevate their slates, sharpen their global strategies and unlock new co-production and market opportunities. I can’t wait to celebrate their growth as they step onto the global stage as confident and equal business partners.”
Participants in this year’s project Hannah Donegan, producer of docs including Black Zombie (2026) and A.rtificial I.mmortality (2021); Ossob Hassan, producer of docs series Black Life: Untold Stories (2023) and Fear Thy Neighbour (2021); Émilie Martel, a director/producer whose projects include the forthcoming feature Land of No Pain; Raj Panikkar, whose recent credits as an executive producer include Collar of Duty Kids (2025) and Leo’s Pollinators (2021); and Lisa Rideout, director/producer of docs including the Canadian Screen Award winner Sex with Sue (2023) and Degrassi: Whatever It Takes (2025).
